Japanese Manhole cover from Osaka

Japanese Manhole cover from Osaka

Week 1 - Episode 4 - Manhole Covers

February 01, 2019

Today we’re focusing some of my favourite circles: manhole covers.

I love how in most places these are decorated with patterns, motifs, or even, like the Japanese manhole covers, with full-colour designs reminiscent of woodblock prints.

If you’d like to see more Japanese examples check out the amazing Instagram stream of @manholecovers:

But even more modest covers can add beauty and delight to your life. Raubdruckerin from Berlin started to use manhole covers as ready-made print designs, a brilliant idea.

You can read more about her project to reveal the urban unobserved on the site:

What kind of manhole covers do you have in your part of the world?
